Environmental & Analytical Chemistry

Responsible: prof. Laura Borgese

The main research activities deal with innovative method for sampling and analyse the elemental composition of environmental, food and biological samples by means of total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (TXRF), with more than 10 years of experience in the field. Significant contributions are provided to standardization field in the ISO TC 201 “Surface Chemical Analysis” leading the develop ISO/TS 18507:2015 “Use of Total Reflection X-ray Fluorescence spectroscopy in biological and environmental analysis”; ISO 20289:2018 “Total reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis of water”.

We have extensive experience in developing protocols for elemental analysis based on TXRF, and we developed the SMART STORE® prototypes for sample preparation of PM filters for TXRF analysis (http://www.smartsolutionsweb.it/smartstore.html)

We have access to Chem4Tech facilities where two TXRF instruments with Mo and Rh X-ray tubes are available. One custom-made instrument is equipped with a larger area detector designed on purpose for PM filters analysis.
